Wireless Tank Gauging

Ferrum Energy is proud to offer Honeywell’s OneWireless™ solutions for tank gauging applications, designed to meet the complex demands of fuel terminals, refineries, and tank farms. These wireless technologies enable seamless and cost-effective communication across large areas, eliminating the need for extensive wiring infrastructure while improving safety, reliability, and data access in real time.

OneWireless™ System Components

The Honeywell OneWireless™ network is a robust, secure, and scalable infrastructure based on ISA100 Wireless™ standards. It supports both process control and asset management applications.

  • FDAP (Field Device Access Point): Provides reliable wireless coverage and serves as a gateway for ISA100 Wireless and WirelessHART devices.
  • WDM (Wireless Device Manager): Manages and monitors field instruments, collects data, and ensures secure communication with the control system.
  • WLC (Wireless LAN Controller): Enables enterprise-wide wireless connectivity, managing Wi-Fi clients, access points, and enforcing security policies.
  • PCAP (Process Control Access Point): Supports dual-radio connectivity to link ISA100/WirelessHART networks with high-speed industrial Wi-Fi.

Wireless Applications in Terminal Environments

Honeywell’s Enraf wireless multiprotocol solution enables a wide range of use cases:

  • Remote tank level and temperature monitoring
  • Inventory reconciliation and loss control
  • Emergency safety shower status monitoring
  • Environmental gas detection and vapor emission monitoring
  • Mobile worker connectivity and wearable monitoring
  • Leak detection systems and pipeline interface tracking
  • Wireless I/O signal replication

Advantages of Wireless vs. Wired Systems

Implementing wireless technology in terminal environments offers significant advantages:

  • Up to 50% reduction in installation costs
  • Shorter deployment time and minimized disruption to operations
  • Easy scalability for future expansions
  • Increased reliability in hard-to-wire or remote areas
  • Enhanced personnel safety by enabling remote monitoring and diagnostics
  • Lower maintenance and operational costs

Wireless Integration with Tank Gauging

OneWireless™ Network Architecture and Benefits

Honeywell OneWireless™, is a universal and multiprotocol platform based on a mesh topology. This architecture enables multiple communication paths between sensors, access points, and repeaters (FDAPs), ensuring redundancy and robustness in wireless communication.

In this topology, level sensors and other field devices communicate via FDAPs, which act as repeaters. Additionally, components are integrated to connect Modbus TCP systems with remote devices, with sufficient capacity for operation and future expansion.

We recommended conducting a site application study to validate links, antenna placement, and coverage, ensuring proper implementation. The OneWireless™ network supports ISA100, WirelessHART, and industrial Wi-Fi devices, allowing for comprehensive wireless coverage across the entire facility.

Thanks to its automatic data prioritization, the network ensures that critical information is transmitted with priority. Its self-organizing, high-speed mesh architecture, with latency control, provides a secure and efficient solution for critical terminal applications.
